Kurt Bluemel named this particular cultivar of Miscanthus sinensis var. condensatus 'Cosmopolitan.' The plant was first identified by Toyoichi Aoki in Japan during the 1940s, and it was later introduced to the U.S. National Arboretum by Masato Yokoi in the mid-1970s. This cultivar is distinguished by its broad leaves featuring a creamy edge and a prominent green midrib, creating a striking, arching clump. While individual stems may revert to a solid green color, the flower plumes remain attractive well into the winter, adding seasonal interest. It thrives in sandy soils but requires consistent watering during the summer months.
