Penstemon digitalis is a perennial plant that forms clumps and belongs to the plantain family, thriving in the mountainous regions of North Carolina. This species can reach heights of up to 5 feet and is commonly found in prairies, along the edges of woodlands, and in open forests across the eastern and central United States. During late spring to early summer, it produces striking clusters of white tubular flowers that attract a variety of pollinators, including bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. Notably, this plant is resilient and does not face significant issues with diseases or pests.
Easily adaptable to cultivation, Penstemon digitalis prefers well-drained loamy soils that range from moist to dry, and it can also tolerate well-drained clay soils. For optimal growth, it should be planted in full sun to light shade, ideally in small groups within native or pollinator gardens, naturalized areas, or along borders.
