Formally referred to as Beloperone guttata, this evergreen tropical shrub flourishes in shaded environments and is often cultivated as a houseplant in temperate regions. To encourage blooming indoors, it needs bright, indirect light and warm temperatures. The plant features vibrant green, hairy oval leaves and produces small white flowers adorned with maroon throats, complemented by striking bracts in shades of red, orange, yellow, and green that resemble either a hop flower or a shrimp. Typically, it reaches a height of about one foot with slender branches. When grown outside, it is known to attract hummingbirds and butterflies.
However, it can be susceptible to pests such as spider mites and whiteflies.
