The Hedge Fern, also known as the Soft Shield Fern, is a tufted evergreen plant characterized by its fronds that gracefully arch outward from the center, creating a swirling effect when seen from above.
This fern thrives in conditions ranging from partial to full shade, preferring fertile, moist, and well-drained soil. Excessive sunlight can lead to yellowing of the fronds.
To promote healthy growth, it is advisable to trim the fronds in February or March, just before the new ones begin to sprout.
In regions with mild winters, the Hedge Fern may retain its evergreen status; however, in colder areas, it typically becomes semi-evergreen.
During winter, if the soil lacks proper drainage, there is a risk of crown rot developing.
