With a wide array of varieties and cultivars available, x Hucherellas, commonly known as Foamy Bells, can seamlessly enhance nearly any garden setting. These clumping perennials are hybrids of Heuchera (Coral Bells) and Tiarella (Foam Flowers), showcasing a blend of characteristics from both parent plants. The vibrant foliage, inherited from Heuchera, is complemented by the unique leaf patterns and shapes derived from Tiarella. In milder climates, many of these varieties remain evergreen, contributing visual interest throughout the winter months.
These plants exhibit a low-growing, compact form adorned with delicate, colorful leaves. Above the foliage, clusters of pink or white flowers emerge in airy sprays.
For optimal growth, plant them in partial shade within moist, well-drained, organically rich soil. A spot that receives morning sunlight is also ideal. They thrive when grouped together, whether massed at the front of a border, along walkways or patios, in rock gardens, woodlands, or even in window boxes.
Their growth habit makes them excellent candidates for container gardening, with certain cultivars serving as both spillers and fillers.
While shade is preferred for these plants, those in cooler climates can tolerate more sunlight. Darker varieties tend to be more resilient to sun exposure once they are well-established.
In terms of pests and diseases, x Hucherellas generally face no significant issues. However, some varieties may experience rust, and root weevils can pose a threat. Additionally, heavy frost followed by warm weather can cause the roots to heave, and overwatering can lead to rot if proper drainage is not ensured.
