Portugal Laurel is an evergreen shrub or tree belonging to the rose family, indigenous to Portugal and Spain. It typically reaches heights and widths of 10 to 20 feet, and can grow taller if shaped into a tree. When left as a shrub, it has a dense, rounded appearance and can be trimmed to serve as an effective hedge. The leaves are a glossy dark green, and in the spring, the plant produces fragrant clusters of white flowers that can measure between 6 to 10 inches in length, which are later succeeded by purple, berry-like drupes.
This shrub thrives in average, well-drained soils that maintain some moisture and demonstrates drought resistance once it is well-established. Propagation can be achieved in the spring through softwood stem cuttings.
Portugal Laurel is ideal for use as a hedge, privacy screen, or even as a topiary feature.
However, it is important to note that pests such as vine weevils and leaf-mining moths may damage the leaves, and the plant can be susceptible to diseases like powdery mildew.
