Phonetic Spelling:RO-zuh
Genus:Rosa
Species:
Family:Rosaceae
This rugged shrub rose, known as rugosa, is exceptionally resilient and produces blooms repeatedly throughout the growing season. Its striking large pink flowers give way to prominent red hips, so it's advisable not to deadhead. For optimal growth, it thrives in full sunlight and prefers well-drained soils, such as moist loam or sandy loam, while clay soils should be avoided. This rose is tolerant of both salt and deer, and once it is established, it can withstand drought conditions as well. In the fall, it showcases beautiful bronze foliage. To maintain an open structure and encourage the growth of new canes, prune using the renewal method by cutting back one-third of the oldest canes to the ground in late winter. Be cautious of the prickles!
This variety is highly resistant to black spot, mildew, and rust. However, keep an eye out for pests such as aphids, leafhoppers, spider mites, scale, caterpillars, sawfly larvae, cane borers, Japanese beetles, rose stem girders, rose midges, rose slugs, rose chafers, and leaf-cutting bees, as well as diseases like black spot, rust, powdery mildew, crown gall, canker, dieback, downy mildew, and various viruses.
