Arborvitae Fern, despite producing spores, is not classified as a true fern; rather, it belongs to an ancient group of plants known as club mosses. Its robust, scaly leaves, which bear a resemblance to Arborvitae or Cedar, create a dense mat that effectively suppresses weeds. This plant thrives in partial to full shade and prefers well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. While it enjoys moist, shaded environments, it cannot tolerate standing water. Arborvitae Fern is easy to cultivate and adds an attractive touch as a border around taller plants in pots and hanging baskets. When grown in containers, it requires excellent drainage. Smaller varieties are particularly suited for terrariums. If the fronds look tattered after a harsh winter, trimming them back and applying a slow-release all-purpose fertilizer will encourage rapid new growth. Clumps can be divided at any time throughout the year, and root cuttings can be easily taken in damp soil.
In terms of pests, diseases, and other issues, this plant can create a thick ground cover that may outcompete other vegetation.
