Phonetic Spelling:so-li-DAY-go roo-GO-suh

Genus:Solidago

Species:rugosa

Family:Asteraceae

Rough Goldenrod is a perennial herb native to the daisy family. This plant develops a dense, upright cluster of dark green leaves and thrives in moist, well-drained soil, although it can tolerate both dry and wet conditions to some extent.

In late summer, it produces vibrant yellow flowers on 18-inch arching stems that rise above the foliage, creating a striking display that attracts butterflies and bees. It complements the blues and purples of asters or Joe Pye weed beautifully. Unlike some plants, this Goldenrod spreads slowly through rhizomes, ensuring it won’t overrun your garden. It’s advisable to divide the plants every three to four years or as necessary, and to cut them back in early spring before new growth begins.

This species is ideal for borders in native or pollinator gardens, as well as in naturalized meadow settings. Additionally, it is resistant to deer browsing.
