Genus:Staphylea

Species:holocarpa

Family:Staphyleaceae

Staphylea holocarpa, commonly known as Chinese Bladdernut, is a deciduous perennial shrub that can reach heights of up to 25 feet, making it comparable to a small tree. This species is indigenous to Tibet and China, typically thriving in moist, mixed woodlands and shaded ravines. While it can adapt to various soil types, it thrives best in rich, loamy soil and prefers full sun or partial shade. However, it is not particularly cold-hardy and flourishes in milder climates. The plant tends to produce its most abundant flowers in the years following hot summers.

In terms of garden appeal, S. holocarpa is on par with S. colchica, as both species produce long flower panicles from an early age, creating a stunning display when in full bloom. It has the ability to sucker, which makes propagation straightforward, and it can also be shaped into a small tree form.

Regarding plant health, there are no known issues associated with this species. Plants within this genus are particularly resistant to honey fungus.
