Phonetic Spelling:tha-LIK-trum ak-wil-egg-ee-FOH-lee-um

Genus:Thalictrum

Species:aquilegiifolium

Family:Ranunculaceae

Meadow Rue is a herbaceous perennial belonging to the Ranunculaceae family, commonly known as the Buttercup family, and is indigenous to regions spanning from Europe to Central Asia. Often referred to as Columbine Meadow Rue, this plant's foliage bears a resemblance to that of the Aquilegia genus (columbine), leading to frequent confusion with both Columbine and the Adiantum genus (Maidenhair Fern).

This plant thrives in well-drained soil that maintains a medium level of moisture, ideally in full sun to partial shade, although it favors rich, organic soil with dappled sunlight during the afternoon. It struggles in the hot, humid summers typical of the Deep South, making it better suited for shadier areas during the peak heat of summer. Meadow Rue can be easily propagated from seeds.

Characterized by a basal cluster of delicate, finely textured, compound leaves that are bluish-green and arranged oppositely, Meadow Rue produces flowers in dense panicles atop upright stems from late spring to early summer. Its upright growth habit makes it a favored choice for large planters and containers, often accompanied by smaller border plants. Typically, the stems do not require staking or additional support. The plant features distinct male and female specimens, with the lilac-purple male flowers—boasting vibrant purple stamens—being significantly more visually striking than the white female flowers. These male blooms are arranged in fluffy panicles that can reach 6 to 8 inches in width, while the 'Thundercloud' cultivar showcases deep purple flowers. The dramatic effect of mass plantings of the male flowers is particularly eye-catching.

Following the flowering period, the plant produces ornamental clusters of wing-like seeds, extending its visual appeal throughout the season. For optimal growth, sow seeds in the fall when they are fresh, and divide the plants as new growth emerges in the spring. Notably, Meadow Rue is resistant to deer and rabbits.
