Family:Commelinaceae
Cobweb Spiderwort, scientifically known as Tradescantia sillamontana, is a low-growing perennial ground cover native to the arid regions of Mexico. This resilient plant thrives in partial shade but can also endure full sun, provided the soil remains adequately moist. However, exposure to intense midday sun can lead to leaf burn.
It adapts well to various soil types and pH levels, though it favors well-drained, acidic, loamy soils. To encourage a bushier growth habit, pinch back the tips; otherwise, the plant may develop a trailing form.
Cobweb Spiderwort is ideal for container gardening, but it's essential to maintain a regular watering schedule without overdoing it. Allow the soil to dry out somewhat between waterings, as excessive moisture, too much shade, or high nitrogen levels can detract from the plant's appearance. It's advisable to avoid watering from above. After flowering, trimming the plant back can stimulate a second bloom and help prevent self-seeding.
During the winter months, cease watering altogether. While it is typically regarded as a tropical perennial, it can also be cultivated as an annual in cooler hardiness zones.
For optimal growth, providing more sunlight and reducing water will result in a more compact and silvery appearance.
Quick Identification:
Insects, diseases, and other plant issues: Self-seeding can become problematic, but this can be mitigated by pruning the plant after it has finished blooming.
