Phonetic Spelling:vih-BUR-num NEW-doom

Genus:Viburnum

Species:nudum

Family:Viburnaceae

Smooth Witherod is a deciduous shrub native to regions such as savannas, low wet woodlands, and bogs, capable of growing up to 12 feet in height and width. This plant thrives in acidic, moist, well-drained soils and prefers full sun to partial shade, although it demonstrates a degree of adaptability. Its wavy-edged leaves are more attractive than those of many viburnums, showcasing vibrant fall colors. The shrub produces striking, fragrant flowers in flat-topped clusters, which eventually develop into colorful berries. To maximize berry production, it is beneficial to plant multiple shrubs together. The bark of the Smooth Witherod is smooth and gray-brown, featuring a few raised, warty lenticels.

For optimal growth, it is recommended to plant this shrub in acidic, moist to occasionally wet areas, ideally in full sun to partial shade, near ponds, streams, bogs, or within water and rain gardens.

Preferred habitats include bogs, blackwater floodplains, and seepages.
