If you're seeking a vine to enhance your garden, consider the ‘Amethyst Falls’ wisteria. This exceptional variety of our lesser-known native wisteria is truly remarkable.
In contrast to the more prevalent Asian wisterias, you’ll appreciate the gentler growth habits of this American species. Often referred to as a dwarf wisteria, ‘Amethyst Falls’ features smaller leaves and flowers compared to its exotic counterparts. However, don’t underestimate it; once established, this vine can reach heights of 15 to 20 feet within a single growing season.
It produces a profusion of blooms in late spring, followed by a lighter, repeat flowering in summer. The flowers, which are lightly fragrant and lavender-purple, appear in cascading racemes measuring 4 to 6 inches long in May. Since our native wisterias bloom on new growth, you can moderately prune the vines each winter, making it easier to train ‘Amethyst Falls’ on arbors or various trellis designs.
This wisteria serves as an excellent alternative to the more aggressive and invasive Oriental varieties. It flowers at a younger age, remains compact, and is noninvasive, making it ideal for container gardening.
Additionally, this wisteria is both deer-resistant and drought-tolerant. ‘Amethyst Falls’ is a product of Head Ornamentals, Inc.
It also serves as a host plant for the Marine Blue butterfly, Silver-spotted skipper, and Long-tailed skipper.
Propagation is easily achieved through softwood cuttings taken in the spring, as this plant blooms on new wood.
