Rain Lily, a bulbous perennial belonging to the Amaryllis family, is indigenous to southern North America and extends its range into Central and South America. There are more than 70 species, along with a variety of hybrids and cultivars. In their natural habitat, these plants typically flower right after substantial rainfall, which is how they earned their common name.
These bulbs thrive in well-drained soil and prefer locations that receive full sun to partial shade, blooming in spring, summer, or fall, depending on the specific species. Many varieties flower from summer through fall, showcasing blossoms in white, yellow, and various shades of pink. While most have narrow, grass-like leaves, some species feature broader foliage. They are generally hardy in USDA zones 7-10, although certain types can withstand cooler temperatures.
Rain Lilies are ideal for use in rock gardens, borders, walkways, or compact areas. They also adapt well to container gardening and can be brought indoors if desired.
