Comments: Traditionally divided into 2 subgenera, Proechimys and Trinomys (Moojen, 1948; Thomas, 1921f; Woods, 1993) but Trinomys was elevated to a genus by Lara et al. (1996). Proechimys represents one of the most diverse groups of Neotropical rodents with 63 named forms. Reviewed, in part, by Reig et al. (1980), Gardner and Emmons (1984), and Patton (1987).
