Family:Apocynaceae

The Desert Rose is a succulent species that thrives in the arid landscapes of Africa, Asia, and Tanzania. Commonly kept as a houseplant, it features a bulbous, often contorted base from which thick, gray-green stems emerge, adorned with minimal foliage. During the summer months, it produces bell-shaped flowers that range from vibrant red to various shades of pink, while its leaves can be either solid green or variegated.

To cultivate this plant successfully, place it in a potting mix designed for cacti and succulents, ensuring the container has multiple drainage holes. Water the Desert Rose only when the soil has dried out, but be sure to provide moisture during its active growing season. Fertilizing in the spring will promote flowering. When outdoor temperatures drop to 55°F, it’s best to bring the plant indoors and reduce watering as it enters its dormant phase. Additionally, the Desert Rose is a popular choice for bonsai cultivation.
