Phonetic Spelling:am-ah-RIL-lis bel-ah-DON-nah

Genus:Amaryllis

Species:belladonna

Family:Amaryllidaceae

This plant develops its foliage only after it has flowered, showcasing its aromatic blooms on bare stems. It is not fond of being divided; if it is, it may take several years before it flowers again. However, it can be successfully transplanted, with the ideal time for this being in the fall, once the flowering has finished and new leaves begin to emerge. When planting, ensure that the tip of the bulb is just visible or lightly covered.

The plant features a perennial mother bulb that generates offset bulblets and seeds, thriving within a temperature range that fluctuates from warm (60 to 80 degrees F) to cool (35 to 50 degrees F) and back to warm again throughout the year. While it can withstand summer drought, it requires adequate moisture during the winter growing season. Generally, it is not prone to animal damage.

When planted directly in the ground, this bulb tends to flourish more than when kept in a pot. It also favors sunny locations over shaded areas.

**Spacing:** Place bulbs 6 to 12 inches apart, with 1 to 2 bulbs per square foot; they thrive particularly well when grouped in clusters of three or more.

**Depth:** Plant to a depth of 5 inches, reaching the base of the bulb.

**Uses:** Suitable for beds, exhibition displays, rock gardens, and woodland settings.

**Organ:** Tunicated bulb (also known as a perennial bulb or summer bulb).

**Hardiness:** Classified as Tender III, it can suffer damage at temperatures below 35 degrees F (2 degrees C) and is cold hardy in zones 8 through 10.

**Light Requirements:** Prefers full sun, especially in the afternoon.

**Seasonality:** Blooms in summer; best planted in the fall.

**Pests and Diseases:** This plant is typically free from diseases, though it may occasionally be affected by pests such as aphids, mealybugs, and red spider mites.

**Toxicity:** The plant's toxicity is particularly significant for pets, especially cats.
