Genus:Antennaria
Species:dioica
Family:Asteraceae
Antennaria dioica, commonly known as Catsfoot, is a resilient, herbaceous perennial that typically grows to about 4 inches in height, forming a dense groundcover. However, it is not suited for areas with heavy foot traffic. Native to Northern Europe, this plant thrives in mountain grasslands, dry pastures, and the edges of woodlands, often found in calcareous soils, though it actually prefers sandy, less fertile ground. It can spread between 8 to 12 inches, with the potential to reach up to 2 feet in width. As an evergreen, Catsfoot retains its foliage throughout the year and blooms from mid to late summer. While it creates a carpet-like appearance and roots as it expands, its growth is slow, necessitating regular weeding during the first year.
This plant flourishes in sunny spots with dry or slightly moist, gritty to rocky soil, and it can also tolerate poor soil conditions and drought. Once established, it exhibits drought resistance and requires excellent soil drainage. Catsfoot prefers cooler summers and struggles in hot, humid conditions. It propagates through stolons, which are creeping stems that root above the ground.
**Diseases, Insect Pests, and Other Plant Issues:**
Catsfoot is susceptible to damage from slugs, and poorly drained soils can lead to root rot. Additionally, individuals sensitive to ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, and daisies may experience allergic reactions when in contact with this plant.
