Phonetic Spelling:

Genus:Azara

Species:lanceolata

Family:Salicaceae

Lance-leaf Azara is a tall, arching shrub or small tree belonging to the willow family. This species was first identified by Charles Darwin in 1834 and is indigenous to Argentina and Chile. The genus name, Azara, is believed to pay tribute to the Spanish naturalist Felix de Azara (1742-1821), who explored South America in the late 18th century. The species name, Lanceolata, refers to the shape of its leaves, which resemble the tip of a lance. This resilient small tree thrives in USDA hardiness Zone 8 and prefers moist loam or loamy sand. It can grow in both full and partial shade, making it a suitable addition to the edges of woodlands. While a tree form can reach heights of up to 30 feet, it typically grows around 20 feet and can also take on an arching, fan-shaped appearance.

In spring, the tree showcases vibrant golden yellow flowers that emit a subtle vanilla fragrance, creating a stunning contrast against its glossy green foliage. These blossoms are followed by attractive lavender to purple berries, which, although potentially problematic if they fall on pathways, are a favorite among birds.
