Phonetic Spelling:BER-ber-is
Genus:Berberis
Species:
Family:Berberidaceae
This remarkable hybrid combines two North American species: M. aquifolium ‘Golden Abundance’ and the rare Mexican variant, M. lanceolata (also known as Odostemon lanceolatus or Berberis lanceolata). The outcome is a cold-hardy, medium-sized shrub that showcases fluffy clusters of golden flowers in late winter. It inherits its resilience and compact size from its Western parent, while drawing its vibrant character and robust nature from its Mexican lineage.
The striking flowers emerge on panicles measuring 12 inches in length. This plant is resilient to USDA zone 6. Single-node cuttings can easily root from firm wood with a moderate application of auxin. It does not produce seeds and is largely infertile. Developed at NC State University, this hybrid is named in tribute to the late Dr. J.C. Raulston, the inaugural director of the NC State University Arboretum (now known as the JC Raulston Arboretum). Dr. Raulston had a profound appreciation for both Mahonia and Mexican plant life, making this naming particularly appropriate. In the spirit of J.C.’s commitment to sharing plants, feel free to propagate and share this one widely.
