Phonetic Spelling:BER-ber-is reh-PENZ
Genus:Berberis
Species:repens
Family:Berberidaceae
This broadleaf evergreen is commonly utilized as ground cover because of its height and expansive growth. It propagates through stolons—long, slender stems that can grow slightly above or below the ground, running parallel to the soil. New shoots emerge along these stems, and flowers bloom on the fresh upright growth.
The plant's center can sometimes be sparse, which may detract from its visual appeal. Nevertheless, as a ground cover, it serves as an effective means of erosion control on slopes, thanks to its rooting and matting characteristics. It is advisable to plant it in a sheltered location, away from harsh winter sun and wind, and it should not be placed in excessively dry areas. However, once established, it can withstand periods of drought.
In April or early spring, the flowers attract a variety of pollinators with their lightly fragrant yellow clusters. By late summer, these flowers give way to dark, edible berries that, while somewhat sour, are appealing to birds and other wildlife.
