Bougainvillea is a remarkable genus comprising 4 to 18 species of deciduous or evergreen, thorny flowering shrubs and vines belonging to the Four-O'Clock family, originally from South America. The flowers themselves are small and tubular, typically white, but each cluster of three blooms is encircled by three to six vibrant, paper-like bracts that can be found in shades of pink, purple, red, orange, white, or yellow. This plant exhibits resilience to drought, heat, and salt. It is sterile and propagated through stem cuttings, with blooming occurring on new growth.
For optimal growth, plant Bougainvillea in full sunlight and in acidic soil. In cooler regions, it can be cultivated as an annual or kept indoors as a houseplant in pots or hanging baskets. It is also suitable for planting along trellises and fences, and can be shaped to grow more like a shrub when placed in containers. Various cultivars are available for selection.
In terms of pests and diseases, aphids may occasionally pose a problem, and the presence of thorns should be noted.
