Calamagrostis is a genus that encompasses approximately 250 species of cool-season grasses. Among them, Calamagrostis x acutiflora, commonly referred to as Feather Reed Grass, is a hybrid derived from two species indigenous to Europe and Asia. This ornamental grass features slender, wiry leaves that grow between 18 to 36 inches in height, topped with loosely feathered, purplish plumes that can reach up to 5 feet. These plumes emerge in early summer, transitioning to narrow, vertical, buff-colored forms by late summer. They maintain their visual appeal throughout much of the winter, making them excellent for both fresh and dried floral arrangements. With its fine texture and upright growth from a compact clump of foliage, Feather Reed Grass serves well as a vertical accent in gardens.
This plant thrives in well-drained, fertile soil that retains moisture but can also adapt to heavy clay, poor soil, and a range of moisture conditions from dry to wet. It flourishes best in light shade, particularly afternoon shade that helps alleviate the stress of hot summers. However, increased shade can lead to reduced flowering and less upright foliage. While it makes a great container plant, when planted in the ground, it does not produce viable seeds and is not invasive. For optimal growth in spring, it is advisable to cut the clumps back to the ground in late winter. Additionally, Feather Reed Grass is resistant to deer.
In terms of pests and diseases, this plant generally faces no significant issues. However, it is important to monitor for rust, especially following extended periods of rain.
