Nootka Cypress is an evergreen tree with needle-like leaves, belonging to the cypress family, and is indigenous to the Pacific coastline, stretching from Alaska down to northern California. This tree features elegant, drooping branches that curve upward at their tips, along with flattened clusters of foliage that exhibit shades of gray-green or blue-green. It typically reaches a height of 30 to 45 feet and a width of 10 to 15 feet, growing at a slow pace. The bark of mature specimens tends to peel away in layers.
For optimal growth, plant Nootka Cypress in moderately moist soil, ensuring it receives full sun to partial shade. It serves well as a standout specimen tree or can be positioned along the edges of ponds and streams in the mountainous regions of North Carolina.
However, be aware that this tree is vulnerable to various pests and diseases, including beetle borers, spider mites, phytophthora, root rot, and rust.
