Species:paniculata
Family:Iridaceae
Crocosmia paniculata is a robust, evergreen perennial that typically forms dense clusters. It emerges from a corm and is characterized by its crinkled, green basal leaves and striking red flowers that grow in a zig-zag pattern.
The floral bracts, which are a purplish-green hue, have a leathery texture. While this plant is resilient to cold, it is not equipped to endure freezing temperatures. In colder climates, gardeners can either lift the corms for winter storage or apply a protective layer of mulch to shield them from frost.
Division of the plant can be performed after the foliage dies back post-bloom or in early spring before new growth begins. When dried flowers are immersed in warm water, they release a fragrance reminiscent of saffron and can also yield an orange dye.
Crocosmia paniculata thrives in moist, rocky, and grassy slopes, as well as along the edges of forests. However, in regions with hot, dry summers, it may suffer from damage to its foliage caused by red spider mites.
