Phonetic Spelling:den-STYE-tee-uh punk-tih-LOH-bew-luh
Genus:Dennstaedtia
Species:punctilobula
Family:Dennstaedtiaceae
This plant is easy to grow and thrives quickly in both light shade and sunny conditions, demonstrating a good level of drought resistance. It can also withstand salt spray. When the fronds are crushed, they release a scent reminiscent of freshly cut hay, although they may appear ragged by late summer.
Rather than forming distinct clumps, it develops patches of fronds. The fronds are long, either upright or arching, and have a lance-like shape, typically widest at the base and covered in fine hairs. They are yellow-green, with a delicate texture, and exhibit a bipinnate to pinnate-pinnatifid structure, taking on an oval-oblong form. The pinnae are closely arranged but not perfectly opposite, culminating in an acute tip, while the pinnules are arranged oppositely. The stipe measures about one-fourth to one-third the length of the frond and is colored brown to shiny red. In the fall, the fronds transition to a soft yellow hue.
Preferred habitats include rocky or dry woodlands and forests, rocky outcrops, pastures, clearings, and road banks.
