Phonetic Spelling:dra-SEE-nah mar-jen-AY-tuh
Genus:Dracaena
Species:marginata
Family:Asparagaceae
The Dragon Tree is a resilient, drought-resistant houseplant that grows slowly in temperate regions. In its natural environment, it can attain heights of up to 20 feet, but when cultivated indoors, it can be trimmed to a more manageable height of 6 feet. When pruned, the stems typically develop two or more branches, and they can be shaped to create an Asian or architectural aesthetic. However, it is uncommon for them to flower indoors.
For optimal growth, plant the Dragon Tree in a well-draining potting mix and allow the soil to dry out between waterings, but avoid letting it become too dry. It thrives in bright, indirect light. This plant has low fertilizer needs; therefore, it is best to apply a controlled-release fertilizer during the spring, summer, and fall. Be cautious, as D. marginata is sensitive to fluoride, which can lead to leaf discoloration, so it’s advisable to use distilled or non-fluoridated water.
Additionally, be aware that mites, thrips, and chewing insects can pose threats to its health, and it is also vulnerable to leaf spot diseases.
