Edgeworthia chrysantha, commonly referred to as the paperbush, is a remarkable addition to winter gardens, offering both visual appeal and a delightful fragrance. This well-branched shrub begins its blooming cycle in December, standing as a bare silhouette against the winter landscape, and continues to flower throughout the colder months. Although the individual flowers are small, they cluster together in groups of several dozen, forming 1½- to 2-inch clusters that are truly captivating. Much like daphnes, the scent of edgeworthia can be detected long before the blooms come into view, reminiscent of gardenias but with a hint of spice.

This plant flourishes in partial shade and thrives in rich, moist soil. Once the blooms fade in spring, it showcases attractive bluish-green leaves with silvery undertones, creating a visually striking yet calming presence. During the summer, its appearance may resemble that of a rhododendron, boasting a graceful shape and form. While edgeworthia can tolerate full sun, its foliage may not achieve the same lush green vibrancy as that of a rhododendron grown in shadier conditions. In the fall, the leaves transform into vibrant shades of yellow, adding yet another layer of seasonal beauty.

Edgeworthia is suitable for growth in USDA zones 7 to 9, and can also thrive in protected areas of zone 6. It can reach a height and width of up to 7 feet, making it an excellent choice as a standalone specimen or as a backdrop in garden borders. When planting, space these shrubs about 7 feet apart in areas with partial shade and nutrient-rich, moist soil. While the fragrance of the blooms is hard to miss, consider positioning the plant where it can be easily appreciated by passersby, as its foliage invites touch. Don’t forget to cut a few blooms to enjoy their scent indoors throughout the winter months.
