Genus:Eleusine
Species:indica
Family:Poaceae
Goosegrass, belonging to the Poaceae family, is a summer annual grass characterized by its flattened, pale base, which has earned it the nickname silver crabgrass. Initially, seedlings tend to grow close to the ground, but as they mature, they develop upright shoots and flowering stems that can overshadow smaller plants. Notably, the stems do not form roots at their nodes. Goosegrass typically starts to germinate a few weeks after crabgrass and flourishes in disturbed areas with compacted soil under full sunlight. While it can be somewhat more challenging to control than crabgrass, most preemergence herbicides and selective postemergence grass herbicides that are approved for use can effectively manage goosegrass.
