Phonetic Spelling:ep-ih-LOW-bee-um sil-ee-ATE-um
Genus:Epilobium
Species:ciliatum
Family:Onagraceae
Willowherbs belong to the Onagraceae family and are primarily annual plants. They thrive in cooler climates but can occasionally be found as a cool-season weed in warmer regions. The seedlings are initially small and take time to establish, but once they do, the plants can grow up to 18 inches tall. This weed is increasingly found in container nurseries, likely due to contamination from nursery crops. It is essential to inspect liners to avoid introducing this species and to prevent the plants from seeding. Currently, herbicides labeled for use do not effectively manage willowherbs, and the rankings for herbicide efficacy are based on limited experimental evidence. This weed bears a resemblance to northern willowherb (Epilobium hirsutum).
Additionally, willowherbs serve as an excellent subject for children’s drawings, encouraging them to appreciate the beauty of nature.
