A collection of herbaceous perennials belonging to the Berberidaceae family, commonly referred to as Bishop's Hat or Barrenwort, features a genus name whose origin and meaning remain uncertain. The majority of these species are indigenous to China. They produce delightful, small flowers with four petals, available in hues of red, pink, white, and yellow, typically blooming from May to June. In the Sandhills of North Carolina, this plant functions as an evergreen.
The growth rate differs among species, with optimal development occurring in partial shade.
