Phonetic Spelling:hes-per-AL-oh par-vi-FLO-ra

Genus:Hesperaloe

Species:parviflora

Family:Asparagaceae

Red Yucca, a member of the agave family, originates from the arid regions of Texas and northeastern Mexico. This resilient plant flourishes in hot, dry desert environments and can be easily cultivated in well-drained sandy, loamy, caliche, or limestone soils under full sunlight. Excellent drainage is crucial for its growth. Known for its heat and drought resistance, Red Yucca attracts hummingbirds with its striking red, tubular blossoms.

In regions with cooler winters, it typically blooms from summer into fall, while in warmer winter areas, it can flower almost throughout the year. The plant features slender, arching green leaves that remain evergreen and are visually appealing, adorned with delicate, curling threads along the edges.

Red Yucca is ideal for rock gardens and desert landscapes, and it can also be grown in large pots.

However, it is susceptible to issues such as fungal root rot in overly moist, heavy soils, and it may attract pests like scale and aphids. Additionally, deer may occasionally feed on the plant.
