Phonetic Spelling:HEW-ker-ah
Genus:Heuchera
Species:
Family:Saxifragaceae
Heuchera 'Palace Purple' stands out as one of the earliest hybrids of coral bells, developed from native species with naturally purple leaves. It was honored as the Perennial Plant of the Year in 1991. This plant is primarily valued for its stunning foliage, which can vary in hue from olive green to bronze-green, and even to a rich purple, complemented by a dark wine-red underside. While the small pinkish-white, bell-shaped flowers are not the main attraction, they provide a striking contrast to the darker leaves.
For optimal growth, 'Palace Purple' should be planted with its crown level with or slightly above the soil surface, in nutrient-rich soil, and can thrive in full sun or partial shade. In hotter climates, a partially shaded spot is advisable to maintain the vibrancy of the leaf color. If planted in full sun, it will require diligent watering to prevent the soil from drying out. Clumps can be divided every three to four years in the spring.
The genus name Heuchera pays tribute to Johann von Heucher, an 18th-century German physician, botanist, and expert in medicinal plants.
