Phonetic Spelling:hy-BIS-kus kok-SIN-ee-us

Genus:Hibiscus

Species:coccineus

Family:Malvaceae

Scarlet Rose Mallow is a robust herbaceous perennial that can reach heights of 6 to 8 feet. Its leaves are palmately compound with finely serrated edges, and it produces an impressive, vibrant red flower that blooms from late summer to early fall.

The flowers of this red hibiscus are notably large and eye-catching, measuring up to 6 inches in diameter. The bold foliage enhances its visual appeal. This plant thrives in moist environments, making it ideal for placement near ponds or in boggy areas, and it exhibits a degree of salt tolerance.

As a sizable plant, it is well-suited for the back of perennial borders, mixed borders, or courtyards. It also looks striking when clustered in damp spots along the edges of ponds and streams. However, it is vulnerable to damage from deer.

Often referred to as swamp hibiscus, this plant is indigenous to the marshes and swamps of Alabama, Georgia, and Florida.

Seasons of Interest:
- Blooms: Summer
- Nut/Fruit/Seed: Fall

In terms of pests and diseases, it is somewhat prone to issues such as blight, canker, rust, leaf spots, aphids, scale, whiteflies, and Japanese beetles. Taller specimens may require staking for support.
