Hydrangea arborescens Invincibelle Ruby is a compact variety of smooth hydrangea known for its robust stems. It features striking dark burgundy-red flower buds that bloom into a stunning two-tone display of vibrant ruby red and soft silvery pink. This plant stands out for its dramatic appearance and is ideal for use as cut flowers. It flowers on new growth and is a prolific rebloomer, showcasing beautiful blooms from summer through fall. It can be effectively utilized as a low hedge, a focal specimen, or within mixed borders and foundation plantings.
For optimal growth, this hydrangea thrives in areas with sufficient moisture. In cooler conditions, full sun exposure encourages more compact growth and denser blooms, while shade can lead to elongated plants. However, in hotter regions, providing afternoon shade is advisable. To maintain moisture during the summer and protect its shallow roots in winter, a mulch layer of 2-3 inches is recommended.
Regarding pests and diseases, this hydrangea is generally resilient, though it can be vulnerable to issues such as bud blight, bacterial wilt, leaf spots, mold, rust, and powdery mildew, similar to other hydrangea varieties. It may also face challenges from aphids, mites, scale, and nematodes.
This particular hydrangea was developed through a partnership between NC State University and Spring Meadow Nursery.
