Climbing Hydrangea is a deciduous, semi-evergreen vine native to the southeastern United States, particularly thriving in the coastal plains and mountainous regions of North Carolina. It naturally grows in swamps, bottomlands, and moist forests. This robust vine utilizes aerial rootlets to cling to various structures, allowing it to envelop buildings, trellises, walls, or arbors, and it can also be trained as an espalier. To produce its characteristic flowers, which bloom exclusively on new growth, the vine must climb. While it can serve as ground cover, it will not flower in that capacity.

For optimal growth, plant Climbing Hydrangea in areas that receive partial sun to partial shade, ideally in moist, fertile, acidic soils. It thrives best with afternoon shade. The dense foliage provides excellent coverage, making it a perfect choice for concealing fences or buildings, as well as for creating privacy screens. Propagation is best achieved through softwood cuttings, as growing from seed can be quite challenging.

Fire Risk: This plant has a high flammability rating and should not be situated within the defensible space around your home. It is advisable to choose plants with a low flammability rating for areas closest to your residence.
