Phonetic Spelling:hy-PER-ih-kum

Genus:Hypericum

Species:androsaemum

Family:Hypericaceae

In certain regions, Tutsan can become somewhat weedy and even invasive. To address this issue, three specific cultivars were developed and assessed at NC State University as part of our initiative to create new, non-invasive nursery plants. Each of these cultivars is a triploid, seedless, and non-invasive variant of Tutsan. Special acknowledgment is due to Richard Olsen, a former Ph.D. student currently at the US National Arboretum, and Clara Trueblood, a former M.S. student now with the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, for their contributions to this project. The new Expressionistic™ Tutsans consist of: ‘Pollock,’ characterized by its green and white variegation resembling drips and splatters; ‘Matisse,’ which features a striking purple blush; and ‘Picasso,’ showcasing a neo-expressionistic blend of surreal hues and abstract designs. Other traits align with those typical of the species, thriving in Zones 6-7 and reaching heights of 2-3 feet. They generally perform best in cooler climates, such as the Pacific Northwest. There are no patents or trademarks associated with these cultivars.
