Phonetic Spelling:EE-leks mon-TAY-nah

Genus:Ilex

Species:montana

Family:Aquifoliaceae

Mountain Winterberry is a deciduous tree or shrub belonging to the Holly family, primarily located in the mountainous regions of North Carolina, with some populations found in the Piedmont area. This species thrives in mesic forests stretching from New Jersey to Georgia, predominantly at higher altitudes. Notably, it features larger, spineless leaves and bigger fruits compared to most other hollies. As a dioecious plant, it requires both male and female specimens for successful fruit production. The vibrant red berries are particularly appealing to birds and small mammals.

For optimal growth, Mountain Winterberry prefers average, moist, well-drained soils and can flourish in full sun to partial shade. It can be cultivated either as a shrub or a tree. This plant is ideal for adding winter interest, enhancing naturalized landscapes, and attracting pollinators and birds.
