  • Photo of Illicium henryi (Illicium henryis)

Phonetic Spelling:il-LISS-ee-um HEN-re-eye

Genus:Illicium

Species:henryi

Family:Schisandraceae

The Henry Anise Tree is an evergreen shrub that originates from China and belongs to the Schisandraceae family. This plant typically thrives on cliffs and in scrubby environments, reaching heights of 6 to 8 feet and widths of 4 to 6 feet, forming a dense shape that can be either pyramidal or rounded. In the spring, it produces striking pink to red waxy flowers, each with up to 20 petals. When the leaves are crushed, they emit a distinct anise fragrance.

For optimal growth, the Henry Anise Tree prefers moist, organic-rich, well-drained, and acidic soil, ideally situated in partial to full shade. While it can withstand full sun conditions with some care, it is often utilized as a specimen plant, for hedging or privacy, to add winter interest, or in small groupings.

Common pest: whitefly.
