Isotria verticillata, widely recognized as the large whorled pogonia, is a terrestrial flowering species belonging to the Orchidaceae family. This plant features five broad, stalkless leaves that encircle a stem, which can reach heights of up to 15 inches. During late spring and early summer, the large whorled pogonia showcases green or yellow flowers adorned with three elongated madder-purple sepals. It primarily thrives in dry, nutrient-rich acidic soils found in forests and woodlands, and occasionally in bogs, where it can flourish in full sun, partial shade, or complete shade. Indigenous to Canada and the United States, its habitat extends from Nova Scotia down through the central and eastern regions of the United States, reaching as far as Texas and Florida, wherever suitable woodland environments exist.
