The Meadow Blazing Star is a perennial that forms clumps and is indigenous to the central and midwestern regions of North America. It typically thrives in rocky woodlands, slopes, prairies, or gravelly areas near streams. The flowers are disc-shaped, displaying a pinkish-purple hue and a fluffy, thistle-like texture. The plant features basal leaves that transition to an alternate arrangement along the stem, which can reach heights of 2 to 3 feet. For propagation, dividing the corms is the most effective method.
This plant is straightforward to cultivate in dry to medium, well-drained soils under full sunlight, favoring dry, sandy, or rocky alkaline conditions. If planted in richer garden soils, staking may be necessary. While it cannot endure wet winter soils, it is resilient to summer heat and humidity. The Meadow Blazing Star works well as a vertical accent in the middle or back of borders, especially when grouped together or placed in rock gardens.
