Originating from the southeastern piedmont, it thrives in clusters and can be spotted in open woodlands and along roadsides across the southeastern United States. It is an excellent choice for rock gardens and works well at the front of flower beds.

In recognition of its beauty, this plant was honored as the 2009 NC Wildflower of the Year, a designation overseen by the North Carolina Botanical Garden, with financial backing from the Garden Club of North Carolina.
