Phonetic Spelling:vim-in-AH-liss
Genus:Callistemon
Species:viminalis
Family:Myrtaceae
Callistemon viminalis, commonly known as the Weeping Bottlebrush, is a small, drought-tolerant tree characterized by multiple trunks and belonging to the Myrtaceae family. Its name is derived from the flower arrangement, which resembles a traditional bottlebrush. The tree features robust, rounded branches that are resilient and resistant to breakage. It grows rapidly, reaching heights and widths of up to 20 feet when fully mature. From spring to summer, it showcases an abundance of vibrant red flowers shaped like bottlebrushes, which not only enhance its visual appeal but also attract hummingbirds with their nectar. As the season progresses, the tree's fruit draws in various birds and small mammals. Even in the fall and winter, it maintains an interesting look with its furrowed, peeling gray bark.
The Weeping Bottlebrush thrives in a variety of soil types, favoring well-drained locations with full sunlight, as it does not perform well in shaded areas. While it requires regular watering, mature specimens can withstand drought conditions; however, they are not frost-resistant and are vulnerable to salt spray. With its distinctive sculptural form, it makes an excellent choice for street planting or areas beneath utility lines. This cultivar was introduced by the Los Angeles State and County Arboretum in Arcadia, California. It serves as an ideal specimen for hot, arid landscapes that require minimal maintenance, though it does produce some leaf and flower debris, which should be considered when placing it near hardscapes.
**Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Issues:**
The Weeping Bottlebrush is prone to issues such as mites, insect galls, root rot, cankers, and witches' broom.
