Phonetic Spelling:os-MUN-dah klay-toh-nee-AY-na
Genus:Osmundastrum
Species:claytoniana
Family:Osmundaceae
This plant features a compact, wiry, and horizontally growing rhizome, making it easy to cultivate. It thrives in moist, average to humus-rich soil, whether in sunlight or shade, yet can also adapt to dry, stony conditions. It is among the first ferns to emerge in spring, spreading gradually over time. While the center of the clump may die off, growth continues at the edges. Notably, this fern is rarely affected by deer.
The plant showcases a spreading vase shape with arching fronds that are pinnate-pinnatified, widest in the middle. The pinnae are narrow and lance-shaped, broadening at the base before tapering to a blunt tip. There is no dense tuft of hairs at the base of the pinnae, and the rachis is smooth with a semi-grooved front. Sporangia are found on several pairs of pinnae in the middle of the frond, appearing bright green and having a short lifespan.
