Red Rocks® Penstemon is a hybrid perennial that results from the crossbreeding of Mexican and Californian species, resulting in larger flowers while maintaining cold hardiness. This plant develops a lush mound of dark green leaves, and its striking red tubular flowers bloom in clusters during spring, with additional blooms continuing into the fall. It is both deer-resistant and drought-tolerant, making it a favorite among pollinators and hummingbirds. The foliage remains semi-evergreen.
These penstemons thrive in average, well-drained soil under full sunlight, although they can also adapt to partial shade. However, they do not fare well in overly wet winter conditions. Their deep taproot contributes to their drought resistance but makes them challenging to transplant.
Consider incorporating them into a native or pollinator garden, or a meadow setting, to provide vibrant color throughout the growing season. They are also suitable for container gardening or rock gardens.
