Family:Lentibulariaceae
This fascinating carnivorous plant features slick leaves that gradually curl into a cup shape when it captures and digests insects using specialized enzymes. Its main source of sustenance is gnats, which provide essential nutrients, as the plant's root system primarily serves as an anchor and does not contribute to its nutrition. Butterwort thrives in sunny, open, and moist environments across the southeastern United States, flourishing even in soil that lacks nutrients.
For optimal growth, cultivate this plant in full sun to partial shade with consistently damp soil. A suitable planting medium consists of whole fiber sphagnum moss or a blend of equal parts peat moss and coarse vermiculite or sharp sand. To promote regrowth and flowering each spring, a dormancy period is essential. In winter or early spring, trim back any dead leaves to stimulate new growth.
