Phonetic Spelling:PY-nus FLEKS-il-iss

Genus:Pinus

Species:flexilis

Family:Pinaceae

In its early years, this tree typically has a dense, pyramidal shape, which gradually becomes more open as it matures. The needles of the tree have a lifespan of about five to six years. While it thrives in moist, well-drained soil, it demonstrates a remarkable adaptability to various growing conditions. Young specimens are relatively easy to transplant, but as they age, they develop a substantial taproot. This tree is known for its longevity and serves as an excellent shade provider. Its young shoots are pliable and can be bent without breaking, and the branches are flexible, making them less susceptible to damage from storms.

However, it is vulnerable to white pine blister rust, a bark disease that often proves fatal.
