Jacob's ladder derives its name from the distinctive arrangement of its small leaflets, which resemble a ladder along the elegant, elongated leaves. This plant struggles to thrive in the hot, humid environments typical of the lower Piedmont and coastal plains, preferring a partially shaded setting. As a self-seeding herbaceous perennial, it also spreads through rhizomes.
Its natural habitat consists of moist, deciduous forests and the banks of streams. The plant has low tolerance for drought and will enter a dormant state during dry spells.
Propagation can be achieved through root division or by sowing seeds. Clumps should be divided in early spring or late summer, while seeds can be planted either as they mature or in early spring.
