Phonetic Spelling:sair-ah-SEEN-ee-ah loo-koh-FIL-uh
Genus:Sarracenia
Species:leucophylla
Family:Sarraceniaceae
The Crimson Pitcher Plant, indigenous to the coastal regions of Florida and Alabama, is a unique hooded carnivorous species that thrives in the moist, nutrient-poor longleaf pine savannas found mainly along the coastal plain. Although it is not originally from North Carolina, it has been introduced there and has adapted to the coastal plains. Unfortunately, it has become endangered in certain locations due to habitat destruction.
For those interested in cultivating this plant at home, it can be successfully grown in a specially designed bog garden or in a container. It is important to note that fertilization should be avoided.
